Oh dear

So this is totally strange for an update, after not posting anything worthwhile for ages. This probably isn't worthwhile, either, but I feel like griping to an open forum.

A former prof of mine posted this on his blog, and it struck a nerve for me.

(Please note that this is just a purge, so I didn't do additional research. I will try to keep it as opinion-based as possible while attempting to avoid falsehoods).
One of the things that has always bothered me about the creationist argument is that it seems to be based around the need to have a reason... People have this overwhelming desire to believe they are on this planet for a reason... I get this impression that religion acts as a hand-holding, not just so people don't feel alone in the world, but so they feel special... I guess that's all fine and dandy, in some ways. Sure, Joe Miner might feel better if he knows that while he's down in the mine, breathing in coal dust, day in and day out, God loves him. But the idea that people say, "Well, obviously, evolution cannot be true because that would mean there's no meaning behind the universe," or whatever. Are we, as a species, so fascinated by ourselves that we will overlook hard evidence, just so we humans feel special? All that crap about being made in God's image... I have a lot more to say on the topic. This is turning out to be a shitty post, since I'm tired and can't adequately compile my thoughts, but I'm going to post, anyway.
